About Hedi Kyle and Ulla Warchol

Hedi Kyle has been described as a book structure magician. Hedi was born in Berlin, graduated in 1959 from the Werk-Kunst-Schule in Wiesbaden, Germany, with a degree in graphic design, and shortly thereafter emigrated to the United States. In the decades since, Hedi has spent her career revolutionizing the field of book arts, teaching workshops throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe. She recently retired as Head Conservator at the American Philosophical Society, and was Adjunct Professor at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. Her one-of-a-kind constructions have been exhibited internationally. Today Hedi lives with her husband in the mountains of the Catskills, in upstate New York, where she continues to explore and experiment with the hidden potential of form and materials.

Ulla Warchol graduated from The Cooper Union in New York City with a degree in architecture. After working in the field in the 1990s, Ulla has spent the last two decades developing a multidisciplinary approach to structure. She leans toward a broad exploration of materials and techniques in both large-scale and small-scale works. Ulla currently resides in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, where her studio practice enables her, on a daily basis, never to do the same thing twice.
